Just because gas is cheap does not mean that we as a country need to rush out and buy the biggest, heaviest, thirstiest truck that money can buy.
You're taking a risk. Gas can just as quickly shoot up into the stratosphere just as it has gone down.
Also, climate change. It's still a very real thing.

That's right, do your part and recycle the old beasts in the junkyard, and use those to fulfill your gas guzzling needs!

I'm in the middle of getting the 455 working again in my '73 Buick, and thinking seriously about how to supercharge it... But I DD a Chevy Volt!
Sold my '05 Yukon XL 2500 8.1 to get the Volt. Granted I had it for a specific purpose, but DDing at 11 mpg was eating at my conscience!

Now, you know that logic and reason have no place on this here internet, right? :D
But yes, I do fear that folks are going to do the "It will stay like this forever and ever and ever!" bit and go apeshit buying gas guzzlers...hell, if we must, then just lease them so you can unload it after 3 years, or something...
All that being said, that's a clean line on that Escalade...

We should all buy green vehicles.

Don't listen to this person. Escalades are great. I've got a couple on my showroom right now...

Anyone who doesn't fully expect oil and gas prices to jump back to where they were and beyond in the near(ish) future and is basing car buying decisions on the low prices is a short sighted moron. Sadly, these people do exist.
Enjoy it while it lasts though, obviously, just put the savings to good use elsewhere.

Just because gas is cheap does not mean that we as a country need to rush out and buy the biggest, heaviest, thirstiest truck that money can buy.
Correct.
YOU SHOULD INSTEAD BUY THE BIGGEST THIRSTIEST HEAVIEST CAR THAT MONEY CAN BUY! WHY HAUL LOADS WHEN YOU CAN HAUL ASS!!!

We think alike.

Sorry I couldn't hear you over my car that gets 11 mpg highway. No, seriously the exhaust rattle and belt squeak are too loud.
I will say my parents just now bought a car that breaks into the 30s on the highway. Up until now the best we got was 23.

So you mean I shouldn't of bought this?
I keed! this is going to be a weekend hobby car only. I have a 1.6L ecoboost for daily duties.

The Escalade probably doesn't get much worse gas mileage than OP's WRX.

This isn't necessarily directed at hobbyists. More as a general commentary on American culture.

Market trends suggest that a shit ton of these people exist.

Muricah!

Yup.
My next car will only have four cylinders.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:13 |
|
...It gets a combined 16 miles to the gallon.
Though, yes, my WRX is not the most efficient car in the world. At best I've managed 29 MPGs and 19 at its worst.

I totally agree some people are pretty foolish when it comes to daily drivers.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:21 |

21 combined isn't exactly great for a compact car that weighs half as much.

A supercharged 6.2 Escalade is a perfectly frugal truck as far as supercharged 6.2 Escalades go.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:28 |

Nope. And I didn't say it was. It's an ancient, turbo charged engine mated to an AWD system.
Though, if you do opt for the AWD Escalade ESV the combined mileage drops to 14. I mean, if we're going to make this *~*~*~*~fair~*~*~*~.
The point isn't to bash enthusiasts, but rather your typical family of 4 who is out there looking for their next family car. "Hey, gas is pretty cheap! Let's get out there and take out a 6 year loan on a gigantic truck that'll spend most of its time crawling through parking lots. This is totally how things are going to be from now on! We won't be scrambling to sell this thing in a year because suddenly gas is $6 a gallon."
Trucks and SUVs are flying. Sales of economical cars are dropping. It's a bad trend.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:32 |

It's not about that, really. Enthusiasts are enthusiasts and that's fine.
I'm more or less talking about current market trends in the industry. People are going back into SUVs instead of frugal vehicles because fuel is cheap. But that's not going to be the case forever.
I drive a WRX. It's the most inefficient car in its class.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:32 |

It's a super handsome truck.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:39 |

I say go ahead and buy it ... just don't bitch at me about how much it costs to fill up next year.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:41 |

While this seem true, there is another side to this. My aunt drives a Yukon. She doesn't have any kids at home, so most of the time it seems like she has the giant SUV to herself. But 2-3 times a week it has every seat filled. Some people need this size, and a lot of people don't want a minivan.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 22:41 |

Oh yeah, I get that. I live in a town where everyone with 1-2 kids "needs" a minivan or Escalade... I can't stand to see the waste from these things. They are nice and all that, but so much wasted fuel... Some of them give me really funny looks in my '73 LeSabre, rumbling along with it's primered quarter panels...
![]() 01/05/2015 at 23:00 |

As long as they know what they're getting into.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 23:23 |

Actually, with the new 8 -speed, the Escalade AWD gets 15/21, averaging 17. Not bad for a 6k+ lb vehicle that seats 7 extremely comfortably and does 0-60 in under 6 seconds.
![]() 01/05/2015 at 23:24 |
|
Apparently it gets about the same. The new 8speed and LT1 has done wonders for it :)
![]() 01/05/2015 at 23:31 |

Somehow, even with all the people in Miatas and FiSTs, y'all have managed to make me feel like my 16/17 MPG city is pretty good. Which it sure as hell isn't.

I have a 2015 GMC Yukon SLE "Loaner" from Nissan (I've had it for over a month). It has a 6.2L V8 and a 6-Speed Auto, and is EASILY 25% better on gas than my 2000 Pathfinder with a 3.3L V6 and 4-Speed Auto. MY MY we've come a long way.
![]() 01/06/2015 at 08:40 |

Damn. In both my WRX and my Forester XT the best I could manage was 25mpg. The worst was 15. They generally got around 19. Very thirsty and outdated four bangers. My wife now has a car with BMW's 2.0L turbo, and it gets 34 when cruising and 25-26 easy in the city with more power than the flat fours.
![]() 01/06/2015 at 11:00 |

Slowly. The IC engine has been around for a long time, but it's nice to see everyone scramble for fuel efficiency.

If gas gets more expensive, then I'll just pay for it—I don't care.
Those are the consequences of driving an inefficient car. And I'd rather have any of my cars and no money than some shit ecobox and gas money.
